From physics to public impact
How Thomas turned analytical thinking into real‑world outcomes at the CTP Regulator — and built a leadership career along the way.

At the CTP Regulator, extraordinary colleagues welcome you. Just ask Thomas.
Fresh from years of academic study as a physicist, Thomas joined the Compulsory Third Party Regulator to put his analytical skills to a more practical use.
On joining the team as a Scheme data analyst, Thomas’s role was to tackle data quality issues, develop reports, and write guidance for insurers. The new work environment was very different to working in academia, but with supportive managers and a mindset willing to take on new challenges he very soon progressed to the Scheme’s manager of data analytics. In this role he leads the team in improving reporting, automating processes, and delivering the kinds of insights that benefit the organisation and the community.
Thomas is proud of how his team has been able to provide faster, more useful analytics that keep registration costs reasonable for South Australians.

The impact of our work is real. It’s about problem solving with my team, supporting critical systems, and producing outcomes that matter."

Manager, Data Analytics
CTP Insurance Regulator

Starting out
After years of academic study in physics, I entered my first “real” job as a Scheme Data Analyst at the CTP Regulator, keen to put my analytical skills to practical use. My early days focused almost entirely on improving data quality. It was a steep learning curve not only with the CTP Scheme but also adapting to the operations of a large workplace.
Expanding skills
As I grew into the role, I quickly learned from colleagues, taking on new challenges, and mastering the tools of the trade. I developed technical skills using PowerBI, Tableau, and SQL Server Reporting Services, and honed my ability to clearly present complex data for decision-makers across the Regulator's many stakeholders.
Broadening my experiences
Taking on the Data Analytics Team Leader role meant stepping up to manage a small team, ensuring work was delivered on time and shared fairly. I acted as Senior Scheme Data Analyst for a stint, which further broadened my experience. These responsibilities required me to balance technical leadership with supporting and developing my colleagues, all while maintaining high standards of data quality and reporting.
Partnering with the business
Moving into the Manager, Data Analytics role has brought greater independence and responsibility, not just in analytics, but in shaping how the CTP Regulator’s office operates. I now provide leadership and guidance beyond analytics, contributing to broader organisational decision-making. My focus includes supporting critical business functions and ensuring that our insights drive meaningful improvements for both the organisation and the wider community.
“I’m proud of how much I have developed the data analytics capabilities of the CTP Regulator, enabling them to do so much more with a small team than was possible when I started. We are constantly improving processes to do even more.”
