About us

Veterans SA and the Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) were established in April 2008 to provide support to the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and in particular the veterans' community. This includes:

  • veterans' and their partners, families and carers
  • ex-service organisations
  • Australian Defence Force personnel
  • war widows and widowers
  • students, teachers and historians.

Veterans SA provides a range of services, including:

  • Promoting Australia's wartime history and the significance of national events such as Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and Vietnam Veterans' Day.
  • Promoting the wellbeing of all members of the veterans' community in South Australia.
  • Encouraging cooperation across all ex-service organisations in South Australia.
  • Providing a forum for the veterans' community to communicate directly to the highest levels of State Government through the Minister for Veterans' Affairs (the Minister).
  • Monitoring and providing advice about matters relating to the recognition and commemoration of the service of veterans.

VAC is chaired by former Governor, Sir Eric Neal A.C., C.V.O. and comprises 16 members of the veterans' community. Council members range in experience from a World War II veteran (former Prisoner of War) to veterans of the war in Iraq. Membership is finely balanced by experience, gender, service, rank, corps and conflict to create a body truly representative of the veterans' community in South Australia.
